Newsham Pond: the wildlife reserve on our doorstep

Some nature reserves announce themselves with visitor centres and car parks. Newsham Pond does the opposite: it sits quietly inside a Blyth housing estate, ringed by willow, and unless you live nearby you could pass within a few streets of it and never know. One of its entrances is on the street next to ours.

A reservoir gone wild

The pond is a former reservoir, long since handed over to nature and now looked after by the Northumberland Wildlife Trust — their reserve page has access details, what to look out for, and how the Trust cares for the site. The open water is fringed with willow and reeds, with paths around the reserve and entrances from both Blagdon Drive and Sandringham Drive.

What you'll see

The resident swans are the celebrities, gliding about with the confidence of birds who know they own the place. In summer the margins hum with damselflies — the Trust records several species here, from large reds to blue-tailed — and there's a dipping platform over the water, installed by the Trust, where kids (and honest adults) can peer into the underwater world. The reserve's closeness to the coast pulls in plenty of passing birdlife too — a rewarding spot for anyone with binoculars and half an hour.

Why it matters if you're staying a while

If you're in Blyth for weeks rather than days, the difference between a good placement and a grim one is what you do with the hour after work. A walk round the pond, then down to the beach as the light goes — that's the sort of evening that makes a long stint away from home perfectly liveable.
